Lagos State Government Reverses 50% Public Transport Discount Policy
In a noteworthy policy reversal, the Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially announced the termination of the 50% discount on public transportation fares within the state.
This significant change is set to take effect from Sunday, reverting the rates for public transport to their previous levels.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LMATA) conveyed this decision on a Saturday, marking a swift conclusion to the discounted fare scheme. Their statement left no room for ambiguity, stating, "The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday." Furthermore, it outlined the timeline for this transition, declaring that "from Monday, November 6, 2023, transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate."
This policy reversal hearkens back to Governor Sanwo-Olu's previous announcement in August when he introduced a 50% reduction in public transportation prices. The reduction applied to various modes of transportation, encompassing services such as the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), Standard routes, First and Last Mile, Rail, and Ferry services. This strategic move was a response to the economic challenges stemming from the removal of fuel subsidies by the Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
The removal of fuel subsidies had placed a significant economic burden on the average Nigerian, prompting state governments, including Lagos, to introduce relief packages aimed at alleviating the impact of fuel price adjustments. Lagos State's response involved implementing a 50% fare rebate on public transport across the state.
However, in a surprising and unexpected development, the state government has opted to discontinue the discount, even in the face of persisting economic challenges and the ongoing repercussions of the fuel subsidy removal on the local population.
